Why we are the best choice for your pet's surgical needs

Many pet owners are curious about what is involved when their pet is placed under anesthesia. At Basin Run Animal Hospital, your pet's safety and comfort are our top priority so you can be sure that your pet will receive only the best and safest anesthetic and surgical care.

All procedures include:

  • Anesthesia and Monitoring—since every pet is unique, anesthesia protocols are customized to meet the specific needs of each individual pet. A surgery monitor is used to continuously monitor the pet’s condition, including temperature, respiration, pulse rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen/CO2 levels. The "HOT DOG" warming blanket system is used to safely control body temperature throughout the procedure. A dedicated surgery technician will stay with your pet during their operation and also monitor your pet after surgery until their temperature, pulse, and respiration are back to normal levels.

  • Pain Medication—is administered prior to and after surgery to ensure your pet's comfort.

  • Cerenia—an FDA-approved veterinary medication, is given to our canine patients, in order to safely and effectively reduce the chance of nausea caused by anesthesia.

  • Suture Removal—sutures can be removed 10-14 days after surgery. This service is included as part of the spay/neuter procedure at no additional cost. A brief examination of the skin and surrounding area will be accessed when sutures are removed.

  • Post-Operative Care Sheet—personalized to fit your pet’s needs.

Additional recommended services regarding our surgical procedures include the following:

  • Pre-Anesthetic Blood Work—ensures your pet is healthy enough to undergo a surgical procedure and that its internal organs can safely process the anesthesia.

  • IV Catheter Placement—fluids are given during surgery to maintain blood pressure and to help your pet recover quickly from the anesthesia.

  • Microchip—a safe, permanent way to identify a lost pet. Microchips are smaller than a grain of rice, and are more reliable than a collar or identification tag because they cannot fall off or get lost. We offer microchips and registration at a discounted price during surgery. Learn more about pet microchipping.

  • Laser Therapy—upon your request, this procedure can be performed immediately following surgery to decrease inflammation and increase blood flow, which results in a quicker healing time. Learn more about laser therapy and how it helps your pet to feel better sooner.

  • Custom Care Collar—an Elizabethan collar (also known as a pet lamp shade or the “cone of shame”) is a protective medical device worn after surgery. Its purpose is to prevent the animal from biting/chewing out their stitches, or licking at their body/incision area.
